The SIG deep hole drilling machine at our Virginia facility enables us to drill/bore bar stock material up to 6m in length. Deep hole drilling has a range of applications across multiple industries; ensuring the bar is efficiently drilled with tight diameter control and precision straightness.
A dedicated deep hole drilling machine allows Sharpe® to achieve highly accurate depth-to-diameter holes into metal beyond what conventional machining methods can reach.
The deep hole drilling processes uses special tools and setups to deliver high pressure coolant to evacuate chips cleanly and achieve precision diameter bores. The adaptability of the boring unit also allows Sharpe® to efficiently undertake:
- Counter boring (enlargement of existing bores through the internal diameter)
- Roller Burnishing (tools which improve the internal diameter surface finish)
Drilling a consistent and straight internal diameter is the initial machining process undertaken in the manufacturing of the following Sharpe® products:
- Drill/ pony collars
- Blast joints
- Drill through lift subs
- Drill pipe pup joints
- Non-magnetic drill collars
We have a range of solid drill heads designed for specific tolerance ranging in size from 19.05mm (3/4″) – 76mm (3″). Additional size boring heads can be manufactured or purchased as required. Please get in touch with our team to discuss your specific requirements.

Manganese Phosphate Coating
At Sharpe®, we offer phosphating services as a critical surface treatment for metal components, enhancing corrosion resistance and improving anti-friction properties. This coating plays a vital role in preventing galling—a common cause of drill string failure that occurs when metal surfaces contact under high load without adequate lubrication.
Our phosphate coating creates a durable barrier that physically separates threaded connections during make-up, reducing wear and helping maintain correct torque application.
Many of our products, including our TorqStopper® and threaded connections, are phosphate coated to ensure reliable performance and extended service life in demanding oil and gas operations.
Peter Sharpe talks in depth about the importance of phosphate coating here.
Copper Plating
Sharpe® is proud to offer copper plating services for threaded connections, using a licensed process from Sterling Impreglon Asia. Approved and validated by JFE and VAM®, this specialised coating provides critical protection against galling, seizing, and tool joint thread wear—ensuring greater reliability and longer life for drill string components in demanding oil and gas environments.
Like our phosphate coating service, copper plating forms a durable barrier that supports smoother make-up and break-out of connections, reducing wear and minimising costly downtime in the field.
Xylan Coating
Sharpe® offers Xylan® coating services to provide superior surface protection and enhanced performance for critical components used in the oil and gas industry. Xylan® is a high-performance fluoropolymer coating known for its excellent wear resistance, low friction properties, and outstanding chemical and corrosion resistance. By applying Xylan®, we help extend the service life of parts exposed to harsh operating conditions, reduce galling and seizing on threaded connections, and improve overall equipment reliability—supporting more efficient operations and lower maintenance costs.
Sharpe® conducts certified pressure testing on new and used pressure-containing equipment in accordance with API 6A and 16A standards.
