Drilling Tubulars

Sharpe® support clients in the specification and supply of API Spec 5-DP and premium threaded drill string and associated tubulars through direct relationships with globally recognised manufacturers and mills overseas. We support oil, gas and mining operators direct, along with rental companies and drilling rig contractors.

With the advancement in drilling technologies, we understand our customers are moving towards deeper wells often with extended laterals. We work with the tubular manufacturer’s engineering team to specify drill pipe and bottom hole assembly (BHA) for the intended application, increasing reliability and minimising rig downtime whilst drilling.

Our tubular products are supported by a range of Sharpe® manufactured Subs and Drill String Equipment and ongoing support through our API Threading, Premium Threading and Hardbanding services.

Our range of Drilling Tubulars include:

Sharpe® supply a range of Drill Pipes from 2 3/8” OD to 7 5/8” OD in Range 1 (+/-6m), Range 2 (+/-9m) and Range 3 (+/-12m) sizes up to 46 feet (14m) in length, in all standard weights and grades.

Tool joints designed to meet API Spec 7-2 can be customised with increased tong lengths on pin and box to extend the life of the asset.

All tool joints are threaded, phosphate coated, hardbanded with customer nominated hardfacing wire, and are then factory make and break prior to being friction welded to the pipe body and finished with nominated internal plastic coating.

Pipe undergoes quality assurance checks including NDT, gauging of threads, drift testing prior to the installation of plastic protectors at point of dispatch and bundled in racks for safe and efficient dispatch to our region for deployment.

Heavy Weight Drill Pipe (HWDP) is designed as a transition between drill pipe and drill collars in the drill string. The HWDP joint helps to reduce the number of fatigue failures seen directly above the bottom hole assembly.

HWDP can be supplied with API threaded or Premium Threaded connections to suit the drill string.

Per above drill pipe process HWDP is manufactured utilising welded-on tool joints friction welded to a slick or spiralled pipe body. HWDP is designed with a unique centre upset or wear pad with hardbanding applied to increase tube life, reduce drag and differential sticking problems.

Unlike Drill Pipe and HWDP, drill collars are manufactured form a single billet of steel, generally from AISI 4145H chromium molybdenum alloy. The 6m billet is heat treated and water quenched to obtain mechanical properties as nominated by API Spec 7-1.

Drill Collars are designed to operate as the lower tubulars in the bottom hole assembly (BHA) and are designed to provide weight on bit for drilling at extreme compression, torsion and bending stresses.

Slick Drill Collars (SCD) are designed with a smooth external surface with hardbanding applied as desired and are preferable in wells where more weight and contact with the wellbore wall is preferred. Spiral collars are easily distinguished with milled spiral grooves throughout their length to help minimise wall contact of the well.  SCD’s dramatically reduce the risk of sticking of the BHA during drilling operations.

All Drill Collars can be supplied with or modified at Sharpe to include added features including slip and elevator recess for ease of running the collars with common drill pipe elevators and handing equipment.

Sharpe® also supply non-magnetic drill collars for directional drilling applications.
