Training for the Future

Two new full-time apprentices have joined Sharpe® in Brisbane.

Abraham Sands (in orange) was recruited directly and started as a full time Mechanical Fitting and Turning trade apprentice in January.

Dylan Bosworth (in green) started as a school-based apprentice with the company back in November 2019 and also became a full time Mechanical Fitting and Turning apprentice in January this year.

The two 17 year olds will now spend the next 4 years working under the close supervision of our team of highly qualified tradespeople and work across our 3 different facilities in Virginia, Zillmere and Roma honing their skills.

The pair was photographed recently setting up a part for a hydrostatic test in our pressure testing bunker in Virginia under the close supervision of workshop manager David Cross.

Sharpe® employs a range of apprentices, trades and professionals and we’re very proud of our staff training program.

Where possible we employ locals who live and want to work in the local community.

Sharpe® is currently training 23 apprentices across the business.

Drilling In

Sharpe Engineering has set a new company record for the longest drilling job on our SIG deep hole drilling machine.

The 5 metre section of round bar was drilled out to create a drill pipe pup joint for a major oil and gas customer.

While the 5 metre section sets a new in house record we’re confident the SIG can drill up to 6 metres at capacity.

The dedicated deep hole drilling machine allows Sharpe Engineering to achieve highly accurate depth-to-diameter holes beyond what conventional machines can reach.

The deep hole drilling process uses special tools to deliver high pressure coolant to evacuate chips cleanly and achieve precision diameter bores.

The SIG deep hole drilling machine complements other state of the art equipment at our Virginia manufacturing facility.

API Certified Quality

The orders have been steadily flowing in for our newly American Petroleum Institute (API) certified products manufactured at our Virginia workshop.

Just six months after being awarded both API Spec Q1 and API 6A the workshop is humming with the sound of manufacturing new product.

The Virginia certifications compliment our API-Spec Q1, API 5CT and 7-1 certifications in Roma.

The certifications give oil and gas producers a reliable local supply chain to produce API monogrammed products within critical time frames

API is the highest level of quality accreditation across the oil and gas industry.

The fact that these orders are coming in even during an economic downturn is further evidence of the importance the industry places on certified quality.

New 8-Tonne Crane

Sharpe® has installed a new overhead crane into its Virginia workshop effectively doubling that facilities lift capacity.

Spanning 26 metres, the crane has a lift capacity of 8 tonnes and will significantly improve the workflow of the 2,300 square metre workshop.

Sharpe purchased the crane second hand and modified, reconditioned and re-certified it in-house.

The new crane joins an existing 20 tonne crane already in operation.

The Virginia workshop manufactures a wide range of products on its state-of-the-art equipment and the crane is being used to move product and equipment safely and quickly around the work area.

The Virginia workshop opened in February 2018 and has become an integral part of Sharpe®’s growing capacity.

API 6A Quality Investment

Sharp® is proud to announce American Petroleum Institute (API) Certification for our Brisbane manufacturing facility at 52 Yarraman Place, Virginia, QLD.

Following considerable investment and a recent external audit of our Quality Management System (QMS), procedures and manufacturing methods; API awarded Sharpe® a manufacture, repair and remanufacture scope covering both API Spec Q1 and API 6A. For more information on our scope visit <API Certs>.

In close consultation with key customers, Sharpe® Brisbane initiated API Q1 and 6A certification in 2019 with the aim of remaining at the forefront of the manufacturing industry here in Australia. API is widely regarded as the highest level of quality accreditation across the Oil & Gas industry. API 6A, 21st edition is a product specification that covers wellhead and tree equipment.

Building local capability and capacity around API 6A products and complimenting Sharpe’s existing API-5CT and 7-1 certifications will mean oil and gas producers can rely on a local supply chain to produce API monogrammed products within the desired critical time frames.

Given that Queensland alone has had upwards of 5,000 Coal Seam Gas wells drilled with an estimated 1,500 new wells coming on line each year, there is considerable scope to remain part of a successful industry that represents more than 90% of the total gas produced in the state. Sharpe’s new quality accreditation will also allow us to manufacture components to support interstate Oil & Gas well infrastructure as well as offer monogrammed well head products to our established client base in PNG, New Zealand and across the Asia Pacific region.

Peter Sharpe, CEO of Sharpe Engineering, commented that “Our aim has always been to build a business with a reputation for quality. We strive to continue to produce quality drilling and pressure control related products and build customer satisfaction, this will allow us to continue to generate employment opportunities and encourage industry growth fuelling the local economy”
